Learn Malay

Terms of use

Last updated 23 September 2026 · the Learn Malay app (iPhone, Android) and learn-malay.com

These are the terms between you and Learn Malay (“we”, “us”). Using the app or the website means you accept them. They are short on purpose.

Who we are

Learn Malay is a language course published from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and operated by its owner as a sole trader. Write to hello@learn-malay.com and a person answers, usually the same day. Our support page has the common questions.

What Learn Malay is

A course in spoken Malaysian Malay: a daily audio episode, flashcards, sentence drills and packs, week after week for as long as you keep going. The scripts are written by people; the audio is generated. Like any course, it can contain mistakes — a phrase that is regional, a translation that is loose. It is a learning aid, not a certified qualification, and not advice of any kind.

Your account

You sign in with your email; a one-time link and a six-digit code are sent to it. One account per person. Keep your inbox secure — anyone with the link can sign in as you until it expires. You must be 13 or older, and where the law where you live requires a parent’s consent below a higher age, you need it.

Free week, then a subscription

Who takes the money

That depends on where you bought, and it decides who you deal with about billing.

We never see or store your card. In every case, cancelling stops the next charge and your access runs to the end of the period you have paid for.

Refunds and cancellation

The whole of it is on one page: Refunds and cancellation. In short — thirty days on your first payment, no reason needed; fourteen days on a renewal you did not mean to pay and have not used; and if we close the service during a paid period, the unused part comes back without being asked. Refunds for App Store purchases are Apple’s decision, because Apple is the seller; we support the request.

Classes with a tutor

Classes are 45-minute video lessons with a Malay tutor, booked in the app: a single class, a trial, a weekly plan (Kelas) or twice a week (Intensif). They are a real-time, person-to-person service between you and a teacher, not digital content, so they are sold outside the app stores and paid by card through our payment processor for classes; the price is shown before you pay.

Fair use

The app generates audio on demand, which costs real money, so there are daily limits, and automating requests or sharing an account with others gets it closed. Don’t copy the course for redistribution; personal use, including keeping episodes on your phone for offline listening, is what it is for.

What we do with your learning record

Your progress is yours; we use it to run the app and, in aggregate with everyone else’s, to improve the course (which phrases are hardest, where people stall). The details are in the privacy policy.

Content and ownership

The course — scripts, phrases, audio, design — belongs to Learn Malay. You get a personal, non-transferable licence to use it while you have an account, on devices you own or control. Anything you flag or report to us (a clip that sounds wrong) we may use to fix the course.

Availability and changes

We add episodes as the course grows and change features as we learn. We try to keep the service up, but it is provided as is: we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we may withdraw a feature or the service with reasonable notice. If we shut the service down during a paid period, we refund the unused part.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Ending things

You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Privacy (or by emailing us); that ends these terms and removes your data as described in the privacy policy. We may suspend or close an account that breaks the fair-use rules, and will tell you why.

If you installed the app from the App Store

These terms are between you and us alone — Apple is not a party to them, and we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content. Your licence to use the app is a non-transferable licence to run it on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service. Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support for the app. If the app fails to conform to any warranty that applies, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you; to the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation, and any other claim, loss, liability, damage, cost or expense arising from a failure to conform to a warranty is ours to answer for. We, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claim you or a third party makes about the app — product liability, a failure to comply with a legal or regulatory requirement, a consumer protection or privacy claim — and for any claim that the app infringes someone’s intellectual property rights. You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as terrorist-supporting, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You must also comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app. Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

If you installed the app from Google Play

These terms are between you and us; Google is not a party to them and is not responsible for the app. Subscriptions bought in the Android app are sold by Google under the Google Play Terms of Service, and cancellations and Google’s own refund rules are handled through your Google Play account.

Law, and if something goes wrong

These terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia, and the courts of Malaysia have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer somewhere else, you keep every protection your local law gives you and may bring a claim in your own courts where that law says you can. For a purchase made on the website, the Paddle Checkout Buyer Terms also apply to the transaction itself.

Before anything formal: email hello@learn-malay.com. Most of it is a misunderstanding we can fix the same day.

Changes to these terms

If we change them we update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change matters to you. Carrying on using Learn Malay after a change means you accept it; if you do not, cancel and tell us, and we will refund the unused part of the period you paid for.
